Past Studio Projects

Progress is often a mix of pleasure and pain and this exercise is no different. For far too long I've had a room (and part of a garage) filled with unfinished painting, drawings, half-used art supplies and various other types of art projects left behind to fend for themselves. For years I told myself that I'd return to them, dust them off and give them the glorious resurgence they so richly deserved. But more often than not, that didn't happen. So, I'm taking the time this fall to inventory as much of the work as I can, catalog it here and then ... move it along.

It's a sad process but at the same time quite liberating. As an artist I must remember that creating things is a forward-looking event. And that not everything made deserves to be kept. Sometimes our work is a means to a larger end, a bridge between two points an exercise in craft or technique. It's easy as artists to become overly sentimental about the work itself instead of celebrating the progress that was made simply by having made something.

One of my college art professors made this approach to work very clear by demanding that each day as we left the studio we discard all our work from the days exercises. A large trash can awaited our exit from the studio and we were not allowed to remove work from the room. His mantra to us, "Your work's not precious". His message came across loud and clear. The real value was in having done the work and in having built the skills to do it again – and better – tomorrow.
